The “Own Your Art” Initiative is an effort to encourage young adults to express themselves through their art and to show that it is possible to make a career out of the arts, if they choose. Art is an important form of expression. It’s a form of communication. The more comfortable we are with self-expression, the better we can serve our community and communicate with our peers, friends, families, teachers, bosses, co-workers, etc. Providing an outlet with the arts as a form of open communication and self-expression, we may be able to recognize those troubled who need our help before it gets to a point of no-return.

The Approach

Jade Alston’s goal is to create a brand of mainstream music that is likeable, has great sound quality, and has great lyrical content that tells relatable stories. We want to take a fan-based approach to creating music that involves the input of artistic and creative students. We want to make them a viable part of the music making process by partnering with the school’s SGA boards, music, business, visual arts, and communications departments to coordinate “Own Your Art” workshops.
